Sync your desktop iTunes® music files with your BlackBerry® smartphone. BlackBerry® Media Sync makes getting more from your music quick and easy!1,2,3,4 Want a specific playlist for the gym? With just a few simple clicks, you can choose the playlists you want from your collection.

Or, if you just need a mix of tunes to get you through the day, songs can be randomly chosen from your collection. And, to make sure you’ve always got enough free memory on your BlackBerry smartphone, BlackBerry Media Sync lets you set a limit as to how much—or how little—of your music to sync.

1 For BlackBerry Media Sync to work your media enabled BlackBerry smartphone must be connected to your computer via a USB cable. Certain music files may not be supported by the media player, including incompatible file types and files that contain digital rights management technologies.
2 BlackBerry Media Sync is compatible with devices featuring BlackBerry Device software v4.2 or higher. Devices that do not feature built-in mass storage capabilities (significant amounts of on-board memory) will require a microSD card to be properly inserted. Please visit www.blackberry.com/mediasync/microSD for a list of devices requiring microSD cards.
3 BlackBerry Media Sync is compatible with 32-bit editions of Windows XP Service Pack 2 which requires iTunes version 7.0 or higher; AND 64 and 32-bit editions of Windows Vista which requires iTunes version 7.2 or higher. Not compatible Windows 2000. Mac OS 10.5.5 or higher is compatible with iTunes version 7.7.0 or higher.

To use BlackBerry® Media Sync you require the following:

  • PC Requirements:
    • 30 MB available hard drive capacity
    • Windows® XP (32-bit) with service pack 2 or higher OR Windows Vista™ (32-bit or 64-bit)

  • MAC Requirements:
    • Approximately 20 MB available hard drive capacity
    • Mac OS X version 10.5.5 or higher are compatible with iTunes version 7.7.0 or higher
  • iTunes Requirements (Windows):
    • iTunes version 7.0 or higher (Windows® XP 32-bit with service pack 2 or higher) OR iTunes version 7.2 or higher (Windows Vista™ 32-bit or 64-bit )
  • iTunes Requirements (MAC):
    • iTunes version 7.7.0 or higher (MAC OS X version 10.5.5 or higher)

  • Your BlackBerry smartphone:

  • Supported file formats:
    • Audio Files contained in iTunes that are supported by BlackBerry smartphones
    • Only files with either wav, mp3, aac, m4a extensions
    • Playlists containing photos, videos or any unsupported audio file will not be synchronized with the BlackBerry smartphone
    • Files that are not compatible with the BlackBerry media player or protected files controlled by digital rights management technologies cannot be copied.

Note: For BlackBerry Media Sync to work the BlackBerry smartphone must be connected to the computer via a USB cable.

Setting up BlackBerry Media Sync

The first time you use the BlackBerry Media Sync software, you are prompted to complete the following information. You can change these settings at any time in the Options menu.

PC Instructions:

  1. Connect your BlackBerry device to the computer using a USB cable. Do not disconnect the device until you are prompted to do so.
  2. On the taskbar, click Start > Programs > BlackBerry Media Sync > BlackBerry Media Sync. A welcome screen opens.
  3. Complete the following actions:
    • In the Name your device field, type a personalized name for your BlackBerry device.
    • In the Keep __ % free from music field, specify the amount of media card memory or on-board device memory that will not contain music files.
  4. Click OK.

MAC Instructions:

  1. Connect your BlackBerry device to your computer using a USB cable
  2. In the Device Name field, type a personalized name for your device.
  3. If your device includes on-board device memory and you want to save your songs to this memory type instead of a media card, in the Music Location drop-down list, click Device Memory.
  4. In the Keep this amount of memory free field, specify the amount of memory that you want to keep free for files other than music files.
  5. Click OK.

Transfer iTunes playlists from your computer to your device

Before you begin: Verify that mass storage mode is turned on in your device options. Click Help on your device for more information about mass storage mode.

PC Instructions:

  1. Connect your BlackBerry device to the computer using a USB cable.
  2. On the taskbar, click Start > Programs > BlackBerry Media Sync > BlackBerry Media Sync.
  3. Click Select playlist.
  4. Select the playlists that you want to transfer to your media card.
  5. Click Sync. If the playlists contain music with digital rights management (DRM), those music files are not synchronized.
  6. Click OK.
  7. Disconnect your BlackBerry device.

MAC Instructions:

  1. Connect the BlackBerry smartphone to the computer using a USB cable.
  2. Open BlackBerry Media Sync and select the playlists to transfer.
  3. Click Sync Device.
  4. Select Music > All Songs or Music > Playlists. The media files that were transferred should be listed on your device
  5. Disconnect your BlackBerry device

Known Issues

  • MAC Known Issues
    • Overview:When installing BlackBerry Media Sync for MAC computers, a dialog box may appear reading: “After installing BlackBerry® Media Sync, other software previously used to synchronize data with your Mac®, such as PocketMac® for BlackBerry® devices or MissingSync, will no longer be able to connect to your device and will not work until BlackBerry Media Sync is uninstalled."
    • Cause:When BlackBerry Media Sync for Mac computers is installed, USB driver-related conflicts may arise if other synchronization software for BlackBerry smartphones is already installed on your computer.
    • Resolution:Remove all other synchronization software for BlackBerry smartphones from the computer before installing BlackBerry Media Sync for Mac computers.
    • Additional Information: To return to a previous version of synchronization software for BlackBerry smartphones, you must remove BlackBerry Media Sync for Mac computers from your computer.
